Install The Font

Silhouette studio uses installed fonts. This means you have to install the font on your system first. We have written a simple guide on how to install fonts:

Use your installed font in Silhouette Studio

Using your font in Silhouette Studio is fairly simple.

After you installed a new font make sure to completely close and restart Silhouette Studio. If you don’t do this the newly installed font might not show up.

Select the text tool and type your text.

Make sure to highlight the text for which you want to change the font.

On the right you will see the “Text Style” menu.

Select the font you want to use.

You will see that the selected text now automatically will change into your chosen font. You can now use the font like any other font and change the size, color and more.

Access Special Characters in Silhouette Studio

A lot of fonts come with those nice curly lines and variations of letters and numbers). They look beautiful, but a lot of people find it hard to access them. This is because there are different ways font designers build their fonts which unfortunately means that there are different ways to access these special characters.

Silhouette Studio only supports extra characters for what we call “PUA Encoded Fonts”. If you need to use a font in Silhouette Studio and the font is not PUA Encoded, you may only be able to access basic letters and numbers (a, b, c, d, 1, 2, 3, etc). Sometimes this might be all you need, but often it is these extra special characters that attracts you to the font in the first place!

We have written a simple manual for you on how to access the extra characters in PUA Encoded Fonts which you can find in our PUA Encoded Fonts Manual. If you don’t know if a font is PUA encoded, check with the designer or seller first.
